Budget-Friendly RV Living

Road Trippin' Without the Wallet Trippin': Smart Savings for RV Life.

Alright, y'all, let's get real about budget-friendly RV living! We know hitting the open road sounds like a wallet-buster, but trust us, you can do it without draining your savings. We've been living this life for four years, and we've got some hard-earned tricks to share. So, pull up a chair, grab a sweet tea, and let's dive into how to save some serious cash while living your RV dream.

1. Planning Your Route & Fuel Efficiency: Rollin' Smart!

  • Slow Down and Enjoy the Scenery: Rushing burns fuel! Take your time, enjoy the journey, and save on gas. We tend to stay put for at least a week or more, depending on what we want to see. Plus, you'll see more of this beautiful country!
  • Use Apps for Fuel Prices: Apps like GasBuddy (https://www.gasbuddy.com/) help you find the cheapest gas. Every little bit counts! Also, take advantage of gas points from places like Walmart and grocery stores.
  • Plan Your Stops: Avoid peak traffic and minimize backtracking.

2. Campground Savings: Campin' on a Dime!

  • Boondocking is Your Friend: Dry camping (boondocking) is often free or cheap. Research spots using apps like Campendium (https://www.campendium.com/) or FreeRoam.
  • Consider Campground Memberships: If you camp often, like us, memberships like Thousand Trails or Passport America offer significant discounts. Campground memberships and clubs offer exclusive access, discounts, learning opportunities, and unique experiences to their members. They often come with a host of benefits but do come at a cost.
  • Off-Season Travel: Lower rates and fewer crowds in the off-season.
  • State and National Parks: Affordable camping with beautiful scenery. They also offer discount programs for RVers like the Passport America Card.

3. Food and Cooking on the Road: Cookin' Up Savings!

  • Meal Planning and Grocery Shopping: Plan meals and shop local. Once we set down at our location we take stock of our pantry and then find the nearest walmart to replenish. Avoid eating out too often.
  • Cook Simple, Delicious Meals: RV kitchens are small, but you can still cook amazing meals. Think one-pot wonders, grilled favorites, and campfire cookouts. We make a lot of use of our InstaPot, and Ninja Combi Cooker
  • Stock up on Non-Perishables: Buy in bulk to save money.

4. DIY and Maintenance: Fix It Yourself!

  • Learn Basic RV Maintenance: Save on repairs! We have a warranty on our travel trailer, however it cost us everytime we use it. YouTube is your friend! Watch several videos, not just one!
  • DIY Repairs and Upgrades: Get creative and tackle simple repairs and upgrades.
  • Regular Inspections: Prevent costly repairs. We have found things that needed to be repaired just by inspection, which we do everytime we prepare a trip.

5. Entertainment on a Budget: Fun for Free!

  • Embrace the Outdoors: Hiking, biking, and exploring nature are free or low-cost. We all have electric bikes, which can be a great investment, not to mention a way to save on gas.
  • Free Local Events: Check out local events and festivals.
  • Library Resources: Free Wi-Fi, books, and movies.
  • Game Nights: Family game nights are a great way to have fun without spending money.

6. Staying Connected on a Budget: Tech on a Tightrope!

  • Look for Free Wi-Fi: Libraries, coffee shops, and fast-food restaurants.
  • Use a Mobile Hotspot: For homeschooling and remote work, consider a 5G router like Verizon. Research plans that fit your needs.
  • Limit Data Usage: Avoid overage charges. Or, invest in an unlimited plan, like we do.

7. Community and Resource Sharing: Sharing is Caring!

  • Connect with Other RVers: Share tips, resources, and meals.
  • Join Online Forums and Groups: Online communities can provide valuable information and support like ours.

Remember, family, RV living is about the experience, not the expense. With a little planning and creativity, you can enjoy all the joys of the open road without emptying your wallet. Now, go out there and make some amazing memories! Let's roll!
